While you may think that a burglar will do anything to get into your house if they want to, burglars actually often look for the home which seems the easiest to get in and out of quickly with what they came for – your valuables. Therefore, you may have a security system, or a guard dog and think that that is enough, but the more things you can do to deter a burglar, the more likely they are to give up and move onto a house which is easier to access.

Therefore, while you may think that such security measures are small things and won’t really make a difference in the end if the burglar really wants to get in, if there are enough deterrents a burglar won’t bother. Even with just a few extra security measures you may be able to deter an inexperienced intruder.

For example, you can make sure that all of your doors and windows are locked and that may also include padlocking them from the inside as this will means an intruder will have to break a window to get in and risk attracting attention.

Extra deadbolts and locks on your doors can also make it hard to gain access as there are more locks to pick or jimmy open and this all takes time. You may even be able to nail shut windows and doors you don’t use.

Bars and grates over windows and doors can make it almost impossible for an intruder to get in this way and instead of looking for an alternative entrance apart from the doors and windows, they may simply give up.

A guard dog of any type can also help deter an intruder as even if you only have a toy sized dog, the barking will still risk attracting attention to the intruder and they may simply move on to someone who doesn’t have a dog.
