Businesses are often more likely to have security and monitoring systems installed as a business is not just dealing with the money, possessions and information of the staff and business owners, there are also customers and clients who expect their interests to be well looked after by their business partners.

However, while making sure you have the right security system installed is important, it is also important that you secure and set up your office in a way which makes it less of a target for intruders from the beginning.

For example, many businesses don’t have window coverings and there can be many reasons for this. The business may want to display stock while they are closed, or curtains and window furnishings simply don’t seem to fit with the style of the office.

However, without sufficient window coverings everyone, including potential intruders can see into your office and while you may be trying to display your stock, you may also have computers, printers, phone equipment and filing cabinets on view too. Therefore, make sure you pull all curtains across and turn the lights out so no one can see in when your business is closed.

Also make sure you turn off all computer equipment and photocopiers as these items often have running lights which can show up when a potential intruder looks in from outside. Therefore, turn all equipment right off, it will also save your power bill.

To protect the information of your clients and your business, make sure you back up all files and information at the end of each day before you leave. You may copy the information to an external server or you may simply save it to a disk or USB drive.

Also protect your business during the day by making sure you and your staff don’t let in anyone you don’t know or are not expecting as while businesses are often very secure at night when their security systems are engaged, they can be vulnerable during the day.
