Home security is not just about stopping intruders before they can get into your home, it is also about not making yourselves and your home a target in the first place. There are many ways to do this and when making sure that you couple your alarm systems with common sense security measures, make sure you involve your children, regardless of their age.

We all know that kids often say the darnd’st things, but some of the information they share, can put your home security at risk. Therefore, make sure your children understand the importance of home security and private information.

For example, make sure that your children don’t brag to their friends or even strangers they are next to in the line at the supermarket, about the new expensive items you and your family have at home. You can also help stop this by not telling your children the cost of the items either.

Your children should also know not to tell others where your family’s most expensive items are around the house, especially not the secret location of your jewellery or your stash of emergency money.

Also make sure your children don’t broadcast your schedule as anyone will then be able to work out when you and your family are out of the house and when your home will be empty. Also, if you feel you really need to hide a spare key outside in case you lock yourself out, either don’t tell your child where it is hidden or make sure they understand that no one outside of the family is allowed to know.

For their own security at home, make sure your kids know not to answer to door to any strangers, no matter what they say as they may try to enter your home by force when confronted with only a child at the door.

On the same issue, your children should never tell anyone at the door or anyone who rings that their parents are out as a potential intruder then knows there is only a child at home in the way of the burglary. They should also never tell anyone at the door or on the phone that they are about to go out either.
